1000 Students Of Dilip Oak’s Academy Set To Go To America For Higher Studies

A glimpse of the Fall 2023 Pre-departure Orientation

Like every year, Dilip Oak’s Academy, in association with HDFC Credila, conducted the Pre-Departure Orientation for students joining US universities in August 2023 (Fall semester) for bachelor’s and master’s degrees. This event is one of the largest of its kind in India and has been conducted since 1996.

The event was held in two sessions at Siddhi Banquet Hall and was attended by an audience of around 1500, including students and parents. Dr. Jennifer Gruber, Associate Vice-President; Dr. Seema Sehrawat, Chief of Staff, both from California State University Chico and Ms. Sarika Oak, Director (Operations) Udemy, San Francisco, graced the event as chief guests.

Mr. Oak gave crucial information on things to do before traveling to the US, like medical checks, immunization requirements, insurance and foreign exchange regulation.

Mr. Oak explained that the overall unemployment rate in America is all-time low, i.e., 3.6% and the tech unemployment rate is only 2% in May 2023, suggesting that demand for tech professionals remains.

He further added that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the U.S. will need over 1 million more tech professionals over the next decade. While some large IT companies may have experienced some job losses in recent years, there are still many opportunities for employment in midsize and small IT companies. Moreover, jobs in the non-IT field like engineering, architecture, and finance are not affected at all.

Sarika Oak threw light on campus life, accommodation and security, and important documentation like Social Security Number. She also discussed how to get financial assistance, including campus jobs and job opportunities, after completing the degree. She urged students to be proactive and focus on opportunities that would make them well-rounded, work-ready employees. She emphasized that relationships and networks are important in securing internships and jobs, so students should make friends beyond the Indian community.

Dr. Gruber and Dr. Sehrawat also pointed out that students engage in campus life, make friends beyond the Indian community, and explore student clubs and leadership opportunities. Students should take advantage of the different on-campus employment.

Both students and parents were greatly impressed by the program. Mrs. Geeta Velankar added, “The guidance given was very professional and comprehensive, covering all aspects from settling down in the university, finding housing, and even landing a job. Now, I can rest assured that studying in an American university far away from home will not be a struggle for my child.”

Sameer Bhuvaji said, “Before the orientation, we thought spending such large sums of money on our children’s education was a big gamble. But, Mr. Oak and the university representatives assured us that our children would have good job prospects in America after their studies. So now, we see the money spent on their education as an investment.”

Academy student Sharvari Joshi shared, “I got assistance from the academy regarding the selection of universities, drafting of Statement of Purpose and visa interview. The entire process was seamless, and due to Oak sir’s guidance, I secured admission from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, for Mechanical Engineering.

Informative Seminars Receive Overwhelming Response

Along with the Pre-Departure Orientation, the academy conducted two free seminars on Masters’s education in America. Both seminars received great responses from around 1600+ students and parents.

In the master’s seminar, Mr. Oak highlighted the trending specializations for Computer Science, especially Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber Security, Robotics and Data Science. Also, engineering fields like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Bio-Medical have very good job opportunities.

At Dilip Oak’s Academy, We provide detailed guidance on these processes under our Admission Counseling Services, including a selection of universities, documentation process and visa counseling, and mock visa interviews. In addition, as India’s leading Study Abroad Consultants, we have helped more than 30,000 students to secure their dream admits for various universities in America including MIT, Stanford, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon and other top-ranked universities.

Fall 2015 Pre-departure Orientation

PreDep Orientation Fall 15 DarkMake Your Journey to Your American University Smooth and Hassle-Free

So, you cracked the GRE and TOEFL exams and secured your coveted admit. Perhaps you even cleared the dreaded visa interview. Congratulations! But are you really ready to go? Not quite. One thing remains to be done – you and your parents have to attend Dilip Oak’s Academy’s Pre-departure Orientation for Fall 2014. Here’s why.

What is the Pre-Departure Orientation (and What’s It For)?

If you are joining an American university in fall 2015 and want to make travelling there (and the process of settling in) an organized, tension-free process, then Dilip Oak’s Academy’s Pre-Departure Orientation is a must for you and your parents. There are several matters that you have to think through and preparations you and your parents have to make before you can begin your education in America. The orientation will explain them all. For example:

  • Accommodation – where are you going to stay when you land up in America? Is there someone who can help you get temporary accommodation until you find more permanent accommodation of your own? And what important points should you consider when looking for a good place to stay?
  • Insurance – should you take Indian or American medical and travel insurance policies? Which one is better and for what purpose?
  • Travel and Other Formalities – are you aware of the foreign exchange and airport formalities, the port of entry procedures? Did you know that you have to get a Social Security Number when you join your universities? Also, are medical check-ups or any immunizations required?
  • Documents – which ones must you carry with you? Which ones should you keep at home? And what’s the best place to keep your passport and traveler’s cheques?
  • Planning for Emergencies and Other Situation – suppose your baggage is lost or reaches you only after several days, how do you manage then? Or, if you got your luggage did you remember that you would need American coins to get a luggage trolley? And did you remember to arrange to be picked up”
  • Food, Groceries and Cooking – your mother is going to be worried about how you are going to survive when you get to America. So, should you take every single kitchen vessel that she gives you and, what about all the papad, pickle and masala she is planning to load you up with? Can you get it all there instead or, only some of it? What should you take with you then? And what about cooking lessons?

That’s just a sample of the things you have to think through but, by now you probably have got the picture.

So, in the Oak’s pre-departure orientation program, Mr. Oak will guide you through all the complexities of going to America, adapting to your new environment and settling in there. He will even cover such day-to-day matters as driving and commuting, seeing doctors and what medicines to take. He will even get into clothing and laundry. With his decades of experience in the field and as a public speaker, he will make it an extremely informative and interesting program which you and your parents must attend.

What are the Other Benefits of Attending?

1. Get a free book with all the information in it
At the orientation, you will be given ‘Get Set to Go’, a booklet written by Mr. Dilip Oak, which explains all these matters in detail – so, even after the orientation, you have a written guide to go back to any time you have a doubt.

  1. Meet other students going to your university
At the end of the program we form groups of students joining the same university so that you can make joint travel plans and staying arrangements at the university.
  1. Get contact details of seniors at your university
To get this information, when you come to get your pass, simply fill up a form with your contact details and we will email you the details around a week after the orientation. With this information in hand, you will be able to contact your seniors in advance and ask them for help to:
  • schedule airport pick-up
  • make temporary housing arrangements and
  • help you cope with the initial settling process

Pre Departure Orientation For Fall 2014

You have successfully given your GRE and TOEFL/IELTS exams. And now, after all these efforts you have your admission letter and I-20 form in hand. After months of preparation you are finally ready to embark on one of your most significant journeys in life. However, there are several important issues that you need to deal with in order to prepare you to travel to the US. Our pre-departure orientation session will therefore guide you through these final steps. Following is some important information regarding the pre-departure session.

What is pre departure orientation?
Pre-departure Orientation is a very useful session organized by Dilip Oak’s Academy for students joining US universities. This orientation session is conducted twice a year, for spring and fall semesters and is designed to provide important basic information to prepare you for a successful departure.

Purpose
The main purpose of this program is to explain to you regulations relating to Airport formalities, Foreign Exchange, Medical Checkup and Insurance, Immunization Documentation, Port of Entry Procedure and other practical matters including what you need to carry with you to America. It also includes important tips to help you to adapt and settle into your new environment after landing and joining the university. Issues such as opening a bank account, getting health insurance, and general matters relating to life in USA (food, commuting, housing, doctors, etc.) is thoroughly covered in these sessions. In addition, you will be given ‘Get Set to Go’, a booklet written by Mr. Dilip Oak, which explains all these matters in detail.

Who can attend?
The Pre-departure Orientation is only for those students (and their parents) who have received a confirmed admission. It is therefore necessary that the students have their I-20 forms issued by the university (or stamped F1 visa) in order to attend the Pre-departure orientation session.

What are the benefits of attending?
We understand that most of you are new to international travel and several of you are travelling on an airplane for the first time. It is therefore very important to be familiar with crucial issues such as transit formalities, general protocols at international airports, etc., which can frequently be a source of confusion. Information about making future arrangements such as getting proper housing, leasing agreements, food joints, buying grocery, etc. will be covered in the pre-departure orientation. These sessions are also an excellent opportunity to connect with other students. We make groups of students joining the same university, which helps the students to travel together and also in arranging for an apartment after reaching the university. We also provide contact details of seniors studying at the prospective university so that new students can contact them in advance. Getting in touch with seniors is helpful for the new students to make temporary housing arrangements, scheduling airport pick-up, and generally coping with the initial settling process.

This fall (2014) the pre departure orientation is scheduled on 29th June 2014 at the Ganesh Kala Krida Auditorium, Near Swargate Bus Stand, Pune at 5:30 pm. Those Joining US Universities in fall 2014 can contact our office for entry passes from 20th June.
