In March 2012, we had put up a post advising ECE students, about job opportunities in the US. Today, let’s talk about something related but slightly different: while you are waiting for an admit or preparing for an MS, you can use the time to build useful skill sets. If you are an engineer who would like to explore options in software development, you could think about the area of web-development and related technologies.
Web development specialization: Making an educated choice in operating system technologies and related skills
If you are a wannabe web developer, picking the right skill sets is key to a successful career. Once you have chosen the web development skills you want to acquire, there are many ways to develop them:
- extra “private” courses or certifications
- regular college and work-related project work
- ad hoc additional projects at college / work
(The latter two will also allow a hands-on tangible demonstration of your skills.)
The question is “what web development skills should you focus on?”
Earlier we had launched our new portal to help students applying for an MS in US – it’s called Dilip Oak Academy Online. It had lots of nifty features to begin with, but today we made it even more cooler with two cool new features: US University Admission News Updates & Roommate Finder!
US University Admissions News Updates:
Interested in keeping track of who is getting admits/rejects to which universities? Interested in finding which universities have started rolling out admission decisions? Well now you can get all the updates in your admissions news feed! (As long as you have applied to the University in Application Tracker).
According to preliminary data for Fall 2012 US graduate school applications statistics, it shows that overall applications from Indian students are up by 2%. But whats also interesting is, applications to graduate programs in US from China are up 14%. Which means expect more competition from your Chinese peers for your admits, and if you get admit, expect more competition for Jobs.(Although that market is recovering fast!).
Complete results are not out yet, which should be out around June. Among other findings by the survey for graduate school applications statistics for international students, conducted by Council of Graduate Schools, applications growth from India is as follows:
Overall, its in sync with how economy is moving, but far behind growth from Chinese applicants!
